Religion BriefsFrom the Journal SentinelLast Updated: June 13, 2003Relic of St. Juan Diego on its way to La CrosseThousands of people are expected at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe near La Crosse, as the national "Tilma of Tepeyac Tour" brings a small piece of the tilma, or cloak, of St. Juan Diego for veneration June 21-22. According to Andrew Brannon, interim executive director of the La Crosse shrine, around 6,000 people saw the relic when it visited a cathedral in Denver from May 30 to June 1. Diego is believed to have seen visions of Mary. In 1531, he found her image miraculously depicted on a cloak, in which he carried roses that he found blooming on frost-covered Tepeyac Hill, outside what is now Mexico City. The diocese is building a $25 million shrine just south of La Crosse, at 5250 Justin Road, about two miles west of Highways 14 and 61. The relic will be displayed in the shrine's Our Lady of Good Counsel Votive Chapel from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 21, and from 8 a.m. until a 4:15 p.m. procession and 4:30 p.m. Mass on June 22. A video will be shown at the shrine's Pilgrim Center every hour, except during 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. rosaries. Call (608) 782-5440, or go to www.guadalupeshrine.org and www.relictour.org.
